How do you respond when someone tells you what to do? They don’t ask. They tell and expect you to simply follow their instructions. We all had this experience as children. Our parents or whoever took care of us, regularly told us what to do. We had to decide whether or not we would obey. Sometimes we obeyed wholeheartedly. Other times we obeyed to keep the peace. Sometimes, we said we would obey but knew we wouldn’t. Sometimes we expressed our intention to disobey immediately upon receiving the command. Author Mark Buchanan faced such a situation in his childhood. He was maybe 9 or 10 years old. His mother had just baked a chocolate cake. Then she proceeded to put icing on the cake. It sat ready to serve in the kitchen. She prepared it for guests they expected later. She had to go outside for a bit. So, she gave Mark this command. “Do not touch the chocolate cake I have just made.”
