A Task Unfinished

Matthew 28:18-20

Guest Speaker: Rob Magwood - SEND International Canada

I’m a bit of a visual learner, so when I have a chance to preach, I try to find an image which captures what I’d like to get across. This morning, for this message, I’ve chosen this unfinished bridge. We can see that it’s well along, but it’s still going to take some more work before it’s finished.

Not starting from scratch! – Already underway, and many examples of faithful ministry from the church over decades!

That’s how I’d like to think with you this morning about the Great Commission.
(Been under a rock…? )

For those of us who may not be familiar with that expression, it comes from Jesus’ last instructions to His disciples. It was after Jesus had been born in the manger, lived a sinless life, died on the cross to pay the price for sin, and had been raised from the dead on the third day. Meeting with some of his
disciples, he said this:

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Go therefore
and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them inb the name of the Father
and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all that I
have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the
age.”

You can see that I’ve highlighted a key phrase – “make disciples of all nations”.

Here it would be wonderful to delve more deeply into what Jesus meant by “make disciples” but let us summarize by saying this: A disciple is an apprentice of Jesus, a learner and a practitioner. Not just someone who believes certain things to be true, but who also strives to order their lives
around what they learn to be true.
