Here’s a quick summary of today’s message if you weren’t able to join us live. Psalm 121 is known as the traveler’s psalm. Ancient pilgrims to Jerusalem likely composed it. They had to travel through the hills or mountains surrounding the city. In those days, travelers mostly walked. So they were especially vulnerable to attacks from robbers and wild animals. This danger increased through hills or mountains .
Psalm 121 (ESV) A Song of Ascents.
121 I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
2 My help comes from the LORD,
who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot be moved;
he who keeps you will not slumber.
4 Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The LORD is your keeper;
the LORD is your shade on your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
7 The LORD will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
8 The LORD will keep
your going out and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore.
So the Psalmist asks “Where does my help come from?”
We talked about 3 descriptions of our Helper.
He is the maker of heaven and earth (verse2). So hills and mountains don’t scare Him. He created them along with the whole universe and earth.
He is the shepherd who never sleeps (verses 3-4). So he watches where walk and keeps our foot from slipping. He neither slumbers (dozes) or sleeps (goes unconscious). He has the supernatural ability to stay awake all the time.
He is the keeper who constantly watches (verses 5-8). He provides shade at our right hand to ensure we can keep going and working. He protects us day and night. He keeps our souls from all evil and harm. He protects our going out and coming in.
So the Lord offers the ultimate protection for us if only we will ask for His help today. May you sense God’s blessing and help today.
