Sometimes, it’s easy to conclude that there’s only a few significant moments in our lives – Birth; Graduation; Marriage; Baby; Job Change; Moving; Anniversary; Greatest Success; Death. Everything else falls into the ordinary category or worse the mundane. Right now we can conclude that this time of lockdown and isolation is something to just get through so we can get back to the important things in life.

Yet God does not see our lives like this. With God in our lives, everything matters. Every day is an opportunity to glorify Him. Each moment, each encounter with others has the potential to have some eternal impact. Where do I get this?

One place is 2 Corinthians 5:6-10. “So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.”

“Wait – judgment seat – that’s only to decide between those who know Christ and those who don’t, isn’t it? (Matthew 25:31-46).” Well, yes there is that judgment. But this judgment in 2 Corinthians 5:10 is addressed to Christians. It talks about “receiving what is due for what he has done in the body.” It means that God notices all we do.

So on an ordinary day when we let someone go before us in line at a grocery story, God notices. When a parent of a young child spends those extra minutes comforting an infant, God is aware. When we treat a fellow co worker with respect, God sees. When we stop what we’re doing to help someone else at home with something, God remembers that.

When we mess up and then confess it, God forgives. So let’s take today and everyday as that opportunity to please Him and join in His life building work.

“Lord Jesus, thank you for your care and attention to the ordinary times of our lives. You see them as opportunities to make an eternal difference in our and other’s lives. Empower us to please you in whatever we’re doing today.”
